To culture traditional pearls, a piece of mantle tissue from a donor mussel is embedded in a mussel and returned to the water to be surrounded by mother-of-pearl to create a pearl, two years later when it is removed from the water to extract the pearls that it has created, on some occasions, if the pearls obtained are of good quality, the mussel is closed again and returned to the water for another long period, but this time without including any nucleus. Since the pearl sac has already formed on the first occasion, the mussel continues to generate nacre, which gives rise to a wonderful freshwater Keshi pearl.
