Le perle d'acqua dolce di tipo Keshi sono perle molto particolari, tendono ad essere piatte, soprattutto nelle dimensioni più grandi, e la loro lucentezza intensa e la forma barocca sono le caratteristiche più notevoli.

Per coltivare le perle tradizionali, un pezzo di tessuto del mantello di una cozza donatrice viene incorporato in una cozza e restituito all'acqua per essere circondato dalla madreperla per creare una perla, due anni dopo, quando viene rimosso dall'acqua per estrarlo le perle che ha creato, in alcune occasioni, se le perle ottenute sono di buona qualità, la cozza viene richiusa e rimessa in acqua per un altro lungo periodo, ma questa volta senza includere alcun nucleo. Poiché il sacco perlifero si è già formato la prima volta, la cozza continua a generare madreperla, dando vita a una meravigliosa perla Keshi d'acqua dolce.
